The iconic 19th-century railway arches in the heart of Edinburgh are home to the new Edinburgh Gin Distillery.
This ambitious project brought together an impressive team of Edinburgh-born makers and designers: Edinburgh Gin, Staran Architects, LightMedium, Four-By-Two, We Are Contagious, and of course, Stoane Lighting.
Once an overlooked corner of East Market Street, the site has been transformed into an exciting destination for this bold and playful brand. LightMedium were commissioned to design a lighting scheme that carefully balances heritage with contemporary architecture; enhancing visitor experience along the way. Stoane Lighting products can be found across the project, from the still house to the rooftop terrace.
With a shared commitment to quality craftsmanship, it is fitting that our luminaires were chosen to illuminate Edinburgh Gin’s gleaming new copper stills. To meet the practical demands of this working distillery, LightMedium specified functional lighting that required ATEX certification. Specialist ATEX rated high-specification, high-output Toad spotlights illuminate the beating heart of the distillery and are proudly visible from the street.

Three floors up, level with nearby Jeffrey Street in Edinburgh’s hilly Old Town, sits a brand new rooftop terrace.
One of the key challenges of this complex and collaborative project was preserving the city’s protected views while creating a welcoming outdoor environment. LightMedium introduced multiple layers of light to achieve a warm, relaxing atmosphere.
Typically spike-mounted, our dark skies friendly Mushrooms were adapted with a custom threaded collar and vanity plate. Firefly, designed to gently sway in the wind, adds a soft twinkle to the surrounding greenery. Both products were finished in a textured bronze paint and supplied in two heights. Miniature Tadpole spotlights and integrated handrail lighting complete the terrace overlooking stunning views of our home city.
We also worked closely with LightMedium to co-design several bespoke elements, what they refer to as “signature moments within the experience.” The team made full use of our Bespoke Service which enables complete creative freedom to bring ideas to life.
